Amazon Tailors Android Kindle App for Honeycomb
Amazon on Thursday updated its Kindle app to support Android 3.0 Honeycomb for tablets, including the Motorola Xoom.
The update adds a new integrated shopping experience designed specifically for tablets, a new Honeycomb-centric layout for newspapers and magazines, and other upgrades that take advantage of the larger screen.
"We've taken all the features customers love about Kindle for Android, and created a beautiful new user interface and a seamless shopping experience tailored to the look and feel of Honeycomb tablets," Dorothy Nicholls, director of Amazon Kindle, said in a statement. "As always, Kindle customers 'Buy Once, Read Everywhere,' so Kindle for Android is the perfect companion for the millions of customers who own a Kindle and a way for customers around the world to download and enjoy books on their Android phone or tablet even if they don't yet own a Kindle."
The new shopping update will provide quick access to personalized recommendations and customer reviews, Amazon said, while the magazine and newspaper updates will include full color images. There will also be the ability to pause and resume downloads at any time, as well as an enhanced word look-up capability via a built-in dictionary with more than 250,000 definitions.
The app is free in the Android Market.
The update also adds German language support in the app and store since Amazon today also launched its German Kindle Store. It provides access to more than 650,000 titles, 71 of the 100 Spiegel best sellers, and over 25,000 German-language titles.
The Kindle publishing platform, meanwhile, is also now available via Amazon.de. It first launched with support in the U.S., UK, and Canada, and is now expanding to Germany and Austria, providing authors with 70 percent of revenue.
Google’s Android System Faces More App Attacks in New Security `Frontier'

Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android mobile-phone platform faces soaring software attacks and has little control over the applications, according to security firm Kaspersky Lab.
Applications loaded with malicious software are infiltrating the Google operating system at a faster rate than with personal computers at the same stage in development, said Nikolay Grebennikov, chief technology officer for Kaspersky. The company identified 70 different types of malware in March from just two categories in September.
“The growth rate in malware within Android is huge, in the future there will definitely be more,” Grebennikov said in an interview in London. Kaspersky will offer security on Android in the third quarter of this year.
Hacking into mobile-phone software has become increasingly sophisticated, forcing Mountain View, California-based Google to remove malicious applications that were available from its Android Market store last month. The applications, which were remotely disabled, gathered information about mobile devices and could be used to access personal data.
Google declined 0.2 percent to $524.68 at 10:04 a.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading.
Company spokesman Ollie Rickman referred back to the Google’s comment in a blog post last month.
“We are adding a number of measures to help prevent additional malicious applications using similar exploits from being distributed through Android Market,” Rich Cannings, an Google engineer who works on Android security, said in the blog post.
Popular and TargetedAndroid will run on 38.5 percent of smartphones sold this year, according to market research firm Gartner. The Google software is moving into cheaper hardware and starting to compete with high-volume, low-margin phones made by companies such as Nokia Oyj. (NOK1V)
“Any time a technology becomes adopted and popular, that technology will be targeted by the bad guys,” said Jay Abbott, Director of Threat and Vulnerability at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.
The proliferation of mobile app stores at platforms from companies including Google, Apple Inc. (AAPL), Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), Research in Motion Ltd. (RIM) and Nokia has made the functions and devices harder to secure, said Richard Overill, a senior lecturer in computer science at King’s College, London
“It is a new frontier,” said Overill, who has been researching the industry since 1992. “It’s been an area that the criminal fraternity hasn’t gone into before because they are doing quite nicely thank you in the computer space.”
Software CodeGoogle, owner of the world’s most-popular online search engine, offers Android to handset manufacturers for free and allows developers access to some of its code for writing software. Apple, whose iOS software trails Android in smartphone market share, requires every application to be approved before being sold in its online store.
Android’s open model is “a benefit but equally a drawback,” said PwC’s Abbott. “Anyone can develop anything at any time,” he said, adding that the “model makes it a lot easier for people to exploit it.”
Other experts such as Overill say Android’s model may not make it more vulnerable to attack than a closed platform as its community of users can watch out for and report on any evidence of malware to ensure it gets fixed.
Infected DevicesAad van Moorsel, the director of Centre for Cybercrime and Computer Security at Newcastle University, said that closed systems also face threats. “The fact that Microsoft is a closed system in the personal computing space hasn’t stopped it from being attacked,” he said.
Google removed more than 50 applications containing malicious code known as DroidDream last month, according to San Francisco-based mobile security firm Lookout. The code enabled the software to gain a “substantial amount of control in the infected device,” and could help to install additional applications, Lookout said.
Google doesn’t have antivirus protection on the file level within its operating system, Grebennikov said.
“The malware was not like before,” Grebennikov said. Previously mobile attacks were limited to sending text messages to premium numbers hitting the user with high charges, he said.
Kaspersky Lab, Russia’s largest maker of antivirus software, this year sold 20 percent of its shares to private equity group General Atlantic LLC. The Moscow-based company, founded by majority shareholder Eugene Kaspersky, is aiming to become the world’s largest provider of end-user Internet security software.
Google and Apple risk approving applications with hidden malware. “I worry about what gets rubber stamped,” said David Emm, a Kaspersky analyst. “The walled garden is great unless the wolf gets over the wall and runs amok.”

Skype fixes Android app security flaw
Skype has repaired a major security bug in its app for Android mobile devices that could have been used to expose users’ private data. The updated version of the app is currently available for download on the Android Market. Once the new version of the app is installed, the problem is fixed, the company says.
“We have had no reported examples of any 3rd party malicious application misusing information from the Skype directory on Android devices and will continue to monitor closely,” writes Skype’s Adrian Asher on the company blog. “Please rest assured that we do take your privacy and security very seriously and we sincerely apologise for any concern this issue may have caused.”
The hole in the Skype for Android app was exposed last week by software developer Justine Case, who first reported the vulnerability on the Android Police smartphone security blog.
Before the fix, the app’s bug allowed malicious third-parties to access a file on the Skype directory that contained vital user data, like name, phone number and chat logs.
Security issues have become an increasingly frequent issue for the mobile industry. Days before the Skype bug was exposed, federal investigators revealed that the Pandora music app had enabled the company to collect and distribute “mass quantities” of users’ private information to advertising firms. And on Wednesday, researchers showed that Apple devices running the iOS 4 operating system secretly records and stores users’ location information without their consent. (Check out our guide to encrypting your iOS devices’ location data here.)
In addition to the security fix, the update to the Skype for Android app now allows users to make calls over their wireless carriers’ 3G network, rather than only being able to do so over a Wi-Fi connection.
To help prevent future security issues, Skype recommends that Android customers only download Skype mobile applications from skype.com, or from the Android Market links provide on the site.

A-Fund: Investors Bet $100 Million on Android Ecosystem
Investors have established the first investment vehicle dedicated to Android-focused startups and developers. Dubbed the A-Fund, the $100 million fund will invest between $500,000 and $4 million in products that will shape the Android ecosystem.
The A-Fund is being managed by DCM, a firm with a presence in Silicon Valley, Beijing and Toyko. Additional fund investors represent the top names in Asian mobile and social innovation and include GREE Inc., KDDI Corporation and Tencent.
“The rise of Android is a rare and massive opportunity -- one that comes only once in a major tech cycle,â€
By some reports, Android is already the top smartphone platform in the U.S.. DCM and friends are doubling down on the belief that Android platform is on the verge of a windfall in Japan and China.
It's also following in the footsteps of esteemed venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. KPCB established the iFund with $100 million in 2008 to finance iPhone development, and then upped the ante to $200 million in 2010. It's seen relative success with its investments, and portfolio companies include the now heavily financed Flipboard, social gaming behemoth Zynga and the just-acquired Pelago.
The A-Fund, then, seems much overdo. "Android is one of the fastest growing technology platforms in the world in terms of both adoption and application deployment," DCM's press announcement states. "In the last 12 months, the number of Android enabled devices has grown 861 percent; today there are more than 250,000 applications in the Android market and millions of Android devices around the world."
The A-Fund has made four investments that will be revealed next month, according to The Wall Street Journal.
While there's clearly an interest in jump-starting Asian development around the Android platform, DCM and its partners are said to be to open to startups and developers from around the world.
Skyfire Android App Gets Premium Video, More Social Features
Skyfire on Thursday updated its Android app to make its video optimization feature a $2.99 in-app purchase, as well as add access to Groupon, Twitter, Google Reader, and more.
Skyfire is known for bringing Flash to Apple devices, but it also has an Android option that ties in social-networking features and promises an optimized, less data intensive video-viewing experience.
The Skyfire 4.0 for Android app is free in the Android Market, but going forward, the video feature will cost you $2.99 after a three-day free trial. For a limited time, however, Verizon VCast customers will have free access to the video optimization feature, and the 3 million beta testers who have aleady downloaded the app will continue to have free access.
"While the basic browser will remain free, with the launch of Google's Android In-App purchase platform, the time has come to make our video cloud acceleration service a premium feature that reflects the investment we make to support each user in our cloud," said Skyfire CEO Jeff Glueck.
A November update to the Android app incorporated a variety of Facebook features, and Thursday's upgrade adds eight more social features, including Twitter, Groupon, Google Reader.
The services are accessible via Skyfire's SkyBar menu, with the Twitter functionality allowing for one-touch access to Twitter streams and search. With the video feature, you can watch videos shared on Twitter within the Skyfire app.
The Groupon button, meanwhile, will serve up nearby deals, while Google Reader will keep you up-to-date with latest feeds from favorite sites. Separate sports, news, and finance buttons will also provide the latest info from each category.
Skyfire also added a share button for Web sites, articles, pictures, and videos, and a settings option to disable or customize SkyBar features.
Skyfire released its iPad app in December and updated its iPhone app last month to more tightly integrate Facebook into the experience.

Update Your Skype for Android App to Protect Data
Skype has released a new version of Skype for Android that resolves the configuration issues that left sensitive data exposed on Android smartphones. You should update Skype for Android to the current version as soon as possible to make sure your data is protected.
Last week researchers at the Android Police revealed that the Skype for Android app left sensitive data on the smartphone exposed for easy access. A proof of concept app called Skypwned demonstrates how simple it is to extract private data from the hole left by Skype without requiring any additional username, password, or permissions.
Gunter Ollmann, vice president of research for Damballa, explains that the Skype for Android app fails to implement any encryption or file security to protect the data stored on the smartphone. It is not a vulnerability per se, but rather a configuration error that doesn't adhere to established security best practices. Skype dropped the ball.
Ollmann went on to clarify, though, that this problem is not necessarily unique to Skype. "Many applications on Android (and Android is not unique) fail to adequately store personal data at rest. Ideally file permissions should be used to protect data stored on the device from being accessed by other "unauthorized" applications."
Armando Orozco, Webroot threat analyst, agrees, "I'm sure there are a lot of developers reviewing their code after this news. This likely isn't unique to Skype; it's just the first big name to be found with the vulnerability."
Encryption of stored data is also highly recommended. However, Ollman says that the heavy mathematics processing involved in encrypting and decrypting data taxes the smartphone and can seriously impact battery life and performance. App developers have to strike a balance that secures sensitive information without adversely affecting the smartphone experience to the point that users simply won't use the app.
In a blog post announcing the availability of the updated app, Skype stresses that it takes privacy seriously and apologizes once again for allowing data to be exposed. The good news, according to Skype, is that there are no reports of third-party malicious apps exploiting the hole left by Skype. Of course, it is entirely possible that it has happened, or is happening right now, and it just hasn't been discovered yet.
Skype cautions users to only download the Skype for Android app directly from skype.com or the official Google Android Market to avoid any attempts to capitalize on the attention to trick users into downloading a rogue malicious Trojan version to "fix" the problem.
